India had a disastrous qualifier tour; the team was eliminated as they had lost many matches. This is really very disappointing, as people expected the team to do at least better and come to a respectable position either. This qualifier shows a poor future for India as fans may have lost all hopes on their team. There are few players in the team who could be replaced by some younger talent to produce better results in future tournaments. These kinds of performances will completely make the country to lose faith on the team and football as a profession.

Reasons Why India Must Qualify for FIFA

India is a country where cricket is the only game encouraged at any point of the country. Indian population is around 1.3 billion among which there are less than half a million registered players. Netherlands, which have 16 million people, have more than one million registered players. This clearly tells us the effort our government has to make to educate people about this game. They should see that academics should involve in imbibing this game in school time to encourage people to enter in this sport.

The good thing is that FIFA has signed a memorandum of understanding with Indian Football Federation as a support to develop football in the country. This sounds pretty interesting as we can see it one step closer to improvement in Indian football team. There are few remote places in the country where there has been some development in women football team as well which looks quite promising. The only time when India qualified for FIFA world cup final is in 1950, where the teams competing against India quit the game resulting in India qualifying. Then AIFF officials thought it is not necessary to send Indians for World Cup and withdraw their decision.

The other important thing would be to improve the player’s skills and this sport be seen more as a profession than as an extra circular activity. Infrastructure plays one more key role to improve performance of the team and for this; we have to host some big and popular tournaments such as U 17 world cup. If India succeeds in winning the bid for world cup, it will result in greater improvement in infrastructure and it will bring greater craze among people, who will bring this game up in this country.

Indian women’s football team has good players and this team ranks 50th in FIFA rankings and 10th in Asia. This shows, the team is doing very much better than men’s team and has every chance to qualify very soon. A good coach is a priority for the team, foreign coaches who have some good exposure and experience, need to coach Indian team. This will automatically improve the team and would result in better performance by the team in the upcoming tournaments and ultimately leading to qualifying for FIFA World Cup.
